Our History
JEM Communications began business in 1979 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We began as a telecommunications provider and have not diviated from that path. Our initial focus was selling, installing and servicing key and PBX telephone systems. Three decades ago 1A2 key telephones were still the dominant technology. For those who don’t remember 1A2 key systems the primary phone was a 5-button desktop set that required a 25 pair cable to deliver the voice and light the lights. In the ensuing years the industry and JEM has evolved into the converged voice/data/video providers of today. Now, one 4 pair data drop connects your desktop phone and PC to one or multiple parties anywhere in the world across LAN/WAN networks. And hundreds of productive features are quick, simple and easy to access by the individual user.
JEM Communications has always embraced the technology curve. When voice mail was in its infancy we were installing it. When PBX’s were capable of networking with point-to-point T1’s we were installing them. When Mitel Networks and its sister company March Networks teamed to offer Digital Video Recording products, JEM was among the first in the USA to order demo kits and send technicians to school for certification. When Mitel Networks brought to market VoIP products we, again, were among the first to order systems and send technicians to school for certification.
Success Stories
During the past three decades JEM has been chosen by discriminating clients for important rollouts. One such client was MCI. A number of years ago MCI selected JEM and the Mitel PBX for their 10 Call Centers which were located across the USA. Each Call Center was equipped with a new Mitel SX2000 digital PBX that was linked to a dozen to twenty T1 circuits. In addition, each site was networked by point-to-point T1’s for seamless enterprise-wide 5 digit intercom dialing. Each Call Center employeed hundreds of Call Agents and during those years not one Mitel PBX experienced a system failure.
Over ten years ago a Federal Agency of the Interior Department called us to discuss the cost of upgrading a number of their old voicemail servers. They spoke with our owner, Roger Vergo, and said they were shopping for a vendor that could perform software upgrades for less than $100,000, which was their lowest quote. After a brief conversation Mr. Vergo (jokingly) said he could do the work for half, or $50,000. And then he quoted the real cost, which was $300 for the upgrade disk and he would instruct the agency's telecom technicians over the phone how to do the upgrade themselves. Since then JEM has supported their whole state-wide telecommunications network and will soon upgrade a majority of their sites with new Mitel VoIP 3300 platforms.
In the latter part of 2003, JEM was honored to have been chosen by ITT Corporation – Systems Division, a defense contractor, as the vendor of choice to install a new Mitel SX2000 digital PBX in a facility for NASA and JPL (Jet Propolsion Laboratory) near Pasadena, California. ITT Industries – Systems Divsion had just won the account from another corporation that had been the support contractor for 18 years. ITT Industries designed and implemented a new 25,000 square foot build-out for the expanding agency, which included several hundred new Mitel desktop sets and a voicemail server. This JPL agency is the Deep Space Network, which maintains an international network of antennas that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions and radio and radar astronomy observations for the exploration of the solar system and the universe.
